IBR (Indian Boiler Regulation) Overview
What is Indian Boiler Regulation?
The Indian Boiler Regulation, or IBR, is an autonomous body that establishes and regulates boiler manufacturing norms in India. The IBR Act of 1950 governs the Indian Boiler Regulation. Except in Jammu and Kashmir, this legislation is acknowledged across India. The IBR is a building code that regulates the design, material, manufacturing, inspection, and testing criteria for boilers and boiler related parts in India.
The scope of the IBR, or Indian Boiler Regulation, is as follows: The Indian Boiler Regulation, or IBR, applies to the following steam-related industrial equipment:
- Boilers along with the feed piping from the feed pump
- Full Steam piping
- Steam receivers
- Heat exchangers
- Separators
- Converters
- steam traps
- evaporators and similar vessels in which steam is generated
- accumulators and similar vessels
What exactly is a boiler?
According to the IBR, a boiler is any vessel with a capacity of more than 22.5 litres (five gallons) and the ability to generate steam.
What is the need for IBR approval?
If the IBR regulations are broken, the IBR authorities may take legal action against the individuals involved. If an accident happens on site and IBR standards are not followed, the situation will become problematic, thus the IBR pipe must be designed, built, erected, and properly tested in accordance with the most recent IBR code.
If boilers and associated components are used in India, manufacturers and suppliers must adhere to the Indian Boiler Regulations. The boiler must be built under the supervision of an Inspecting Officer and must be examined at every stage of the process.
The Benefits of IBR Approval
- The risk of an explosion is decreased because the entire system is made using IBR certified components.
- There will be no legal difficulties as a result of IBR approval, giving you piece of mind
- Longer tube life and reduced breakdown are ensured by IBR design and construction compliance.
- Finally, there's the assurance of overall safety. Inspection by a third party that has been certified by the Indian government.
What is the approval process for the Indian Boiler Regulation (IBR)?
The IBR procedure is as follows:
Prepared IBR packages
Drawings and inspection fees must be delivered to the divisional boiler inspector in accordance with IBR.
Construction can begin fabrication and erection only when the drawing has been approved.
Following the acceptance of the drawings, the respective contractors must get fabrication license and welder clearance. The contractor might begin work after receiving an introduction letter.
Following approval, the divisional boiler inspector must be presented with the materials utilised for the job.
NDT (Non-destructive testing) permission must be obtained from CIB when the job is completed (chief inspector of boiler)
Lines will be provided for Hydrotest to the divisional boiler inspector after NDT approval.
The job can be regarded as finished after the hydro test has been done.
From the drawing stage until the final closeout of the work, the design engineering team is responsible for comprehensive approval.
An IBR stamp should be used with the material. The materials used in IBR are the same as those used in ASTM STD, such as A106 Gr B or A671Gr CB60 for pipes, with the exception that the material must be accompanied by the following certificate.
Form IIIA for pipes.
Form IIIC for fittings.
In that step, the boiler inspector in the vendor shop must check and stamp the aforementioned items.
All pipes must be commercially straight, devoid of longitudinal seaming, grooving, blistering, or other undesirable surface markings, according to the Indian Boiler Regulation. The pipes' ends must be squared off. The pipes that have been placed must be properly supported.
Because the IBR is severely enforced by the Indian government, all equipment and supplies must be imported into India with a certificate stating that all imports comply with the IBR.
